- Kutadgu Bilig, Türklerin İslamiyeti kabul etmesinden sonra yazılmış ilk eserdir. Türk edebiyatında mesnevi tarzında Uygur alfabesi ve Uygur Türkçesiyle yazılan eser edebi değerinin yanı sıra dönemin yaşayışını, değerlerini ve İslam öncesi Orta Asya Türk kültürünün ayrıntılarını yansıttığı için de önemlidir. Kutadgu Bilig, yazarı Yusuf Has Hacib (Balasagunlu Yusuf), 11. yüzyılda Karahanlılar döneminde yaşamış, aruz ölçüsüyle yazdığı eserini 1070 yılında Karahanlı hükümdarı Ulu Buğra Han'a sunmuş ve has haciplik unvanıyla ödüllendirilmiştir. Kut sözcüğü dönemin Türkçesinde Tanrı tarafından onanmış mutluluk, şans, talih ve devlet anlamlarında kullanılmıştır. Kutadgu Bilig ise en dar anlamıyla Mutluluk Veren Bilgi biçiminde açıklanabilir. Eser insana her iki dünyada mutluluğu bulmak için gerekli olan yolu göstermek amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır. Dört karakterin simgelediği adalet, mutluluk, akıl ve akıbet kavramları ile bu dört kişi arasında geçen konuşmalarda devleti yönetenlerde bulunması gereken nitelikler, birey, devlet, toplum ilişkilerinin nasıl düzenlenmesi gerektiği öykülenerek anlatılmıştır. Orhun Yazıtları, Divanı Lügati't Türk ve Kutadgu Bilig, Türk edebiyatının üzerinde yükseldiği üç büyük yazılı anıt olarak tanımlanmıştır.
