- Uygarlık kavramı, çoğu zaman kültür kavramı ile eşdeğer bir şekilde kullanılmaktadır. Ne var ki bu iki kavram aslen eş anlamlı değildir. Ziraat sözcüğü ile akraba olan kültür kelimesi Latince Colere fiilinden türemiştir ve ekip biçmek, toprağı işlemek gibi anlamlar taşımaktadır. Uygarlık kelimesi ise yurttaş (civis) ve devlet (civitas) ile aynı kökten gelmekte, kentlilik, kentte yaşam ve kent kuralları gibi anlamları taşımaktadır. Kelimelerin tarihsel kökenine bakıldığında dahi uygarlık kavramının kültürü de kapsayan bir küme olduğu ve kültür kavramının ötesinde bir unsur olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Kavramların günümüzdeki anlamları incelendiğinde bu fark daha belirgin olarak göze çarpmaktadır. Örneğin Alfred Weber'e göre uygarlık uygulamalı teknikler bütünü ve doğa üzerinde etki meydana getiren araçların toplamı olarak tanımlanabilir; kültür ise normatif ilkeler; değerler ve idealler, tek kelimeyle zihniyettir. Kültür, bilinçli değil, kendiliğinden öğrenilir. Nesilden nesle doğal yollarla aktarılır, alışkanlık haline gelir, değişime kapalıdır, tutucudur, zamanla katılaşır ve fanatikçe savunulur.
