Red Queen is a dystopian novel by Victoria Aveyard. It follows the story of Mare Barrow, a Red who is Conscripted into the army until she is summoned to court to become a royal servant herself. She discovers she has powers, which is unheard of for a Red, and the Silvers devise a plan to conceal the revelation. This novel combines court intrigue, fantasy elements, a strong heroine and more. While it had an engaging ending, readers found the beginning and middle slow and dragging. The author introduced cliches such as a love triangle and insta-love. Despite the original aspects, many found it too over-reliant on common YA themes.
