The novel is Considered to be both ordinary and extraordinary, although some readers may find it hard to read at times. The author is praised for getting the details right in every situation and not relying on cheap manipulation to convey powerful themes. One reviewer admits that A Little Life is the saddest book they have ever read. Although well-written and intriguing, they felt a Considerable disconnect and found it hard to be moved by the novel's central character, Jude St. Francis. The reviewer found Jude's orbit of friends to be unrealistic and the world to be insulated and homogeneous. Nonetheless, they enjoyed the characters, mystery, and writing of A Little Life.
