The novel centres around Captain Marko Ramius, commander of the Soviet Navy, who orders the Red October, the largest and most powerful submarine in the world, towards the United States. CIA agent, Jack Ryan, is convinced that Ramius is attempting to defect, while Soviet officials insist that Ramius is mentally insane. The novel is well paced, gripping, and has a wealth of technical detail. The in-depth analysis of the US Navy, CIA, and submarine technology is realistic, which appealed to many readers. The characters are also well-developed, with Captain Marko Ramius being the most interesting and arguable the main protagonist. The action is unique, and Clancy succeeds in creating great tension in an ultimate submarine clash at the climax of the novel.
