Horror Editorial Review
**** "The Burning," directed by Tony Maylam, emerges as a standout within the slasher genre, particularly for fans of 1980s horror. While some may hastily compare it to "Friday the 13th," it’s essential to recognize that this film offers its unique narrative and a better-developed sense of creativity. The plot, based around the urban legend of Cropsy, reveals a darker, more intricate side to the classic camp slasher trope, marked by the intensity of its horror and violence. A significant feature of "The Burning" is its impressive practical effects, meticulously crafted by the legendary Tom Savini. Reviewers have praised these gore sequences, particularly the infamous raft massacre scene, for their effective execution and unsettling realism. The film's editing complements the horror atmosphere, ensuring that each gory reveal has a lasting impact on the viewer. Visually, the film is noted for its beautiful cinematography, capturing the essence of camp surroundings that both evokes nostalgia and amplifies tension. The high-definition transfer provided by SHOUT! Factory further enhances the viewing experience, and the inclusion of numerous extras—including audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes interviews—offers added value for fans and newcomers alike. However, while it shines in terms of direction and production, the film's acting is seen as a weak point, with many characters portrayed as one-dimensional. Despite this, the overall reception emphasizes that "The Burning" remains a memorable showcase of early '80s horror, blending suspense with splatter in a way that resonates with genre enthusiasts. In summary, "The Burning" stands as an essential film for horror aficionados and promises a visceral and engaging experience, coasting on nostalgia while simultaneously making bold choices within the genre. **
